As many of you are aware, and have been preparing for, from September 15th all users will be unable to log into Viking 1.  We very much regret that it has come to this, having, in essence, been forced by the current provider to quickly put in place alternatives to Viking 1. With equipment already in transit to the new site, we expect Viking 2 to come online w/c 16th October.  We would have much preferred to offer continuity in service, but delays in getting the order filled will create a gap between Viking 1 and 2 that we are actively minimising. In order to speed up installation the hardware has already been tested by our partner, and engineers are due to be onsite in Sweden as soon as the hardware arrives there to begin installation next week.  The Viking team is also already prepping installation of applications and other university specific configurations where possible.  


The plan is to get Viking 2 up and running as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we do have a small amount of CPU and GPU provision on campus available with gviking. However we may have to limit this to teaching or other critical tasks.  If you wish to access this please get in touch by emailing itsupport@york.ac.uk.


Viking 2 will be a significant and more sustainable upgrade to Viking 1, enabling us to conduct even more outstanding research and education.
